About MVS MARSEC Academy

A specialist training institution built by maritime and security professionals, for professionals preparing for a life and career at sea.

Our mission

Raising the standard of maritime and security training in Africa

MVS MARSEC Academy was founded on a single conviction: that the professionals who work at sea deserve training that reflects the real demands of the environment they operate in. We exist to close the gap between classroom theory and operational reality.

Every course we deliver is designed around the specific challenges of maritime, superyacht and security environments. Our instructors are active or recently retired practitioners — not career academics — which means the knowledge transferred is current, contextual and immediately applicable.

Operational integrity

We teach what works in the field, not what looks good on paper. Every module is stress-tested against real-world scenarios before it enters the curriculum.

Professional standards

Our programmes align with STCW, MCA and relevant South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) requirements, ensuring graduates meet international benchmarks.

Continuous development

The maritime and security landscape evolves constantly. We review and update our curriculum regularly to reflect changes in regulation, technology and threat environments.

Our story

Built from experience, not theory

MVS MARSEC Academy was established in Cape Town by a team of maritime and security specialists with decades of combined operational experience across commercial shipping, superyacht operations and close protection.

The founding team identified a critical gap in the South African training landscape: courses that met regulatory minimums but left graduates underprepared for the realities of working at sea. MVS MARSEC was built to address that gap directly — with rigorous, scenario-based training delivered by instructors who have operated in the environments they teach.

Based in Cape Town, one of the world's most active superyacht hubs and a gateway to both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Academy is uniquely positioned to serve the growing demand for qualified maritime and security professionals across Africa and beyond.

Why MVS MARSEC

What sets us apart

Practitioner-led instruction

Every course is delivered by instructors with direct operational experience in the discipline they teach — maritime officers, security specialists and superyacht professionals.

Small cohort sizes

We deliberately limit class sizes to ensure every student receives individual attention, meaningful feedback and the opportunity to apply skills under realistic conditions.

Scenario-based curriculum

Theory is reinforced through practical exercises, tabletop scenarios and live drills designed to replicate the pressures of real maritime and security operations.

Cape Town location

Situated in one of the world's premier superyacht destinations, our students train in an environment that mirrors the industry they are entering.

Internationally recognised outcomes

Our programmes are structured to meet STCW, MCA and SAMSA requirements, giving graduates credentials that are recognised by employers worldwide.

Tailored corporate programmes

We work directly with vessel operators, security firms and maritime companies to design bespoke training programmes aligned to their specific operational requirements.
